Using and Caring a Tape Measure

In our last post, we explored different parts of a tape measure (https://ribrosco.com.tw/blog/tape-measure-explained-in-detail/). In this article, we’ll look into the right way of using a tape measure and how to deploy it for various tasks.

To take a measurement with a tape measure, follow these steps:

  1. Extend the blade: Pull the blade out to the desired length. Make sure the blade is fully extended and not kinked or bent.
  2. Anchor the hook: Place the hook against the starting point of the measurement and press it firmly against the surface. Make sure the hook is secure so the measurement will be accurate.
  3. Read the measurement: Look at the markings on the blade to determine the measurement. Make sure to note the units (inches or centimeters) and any fractions or decimals.
  4. Lock the blade: If necessary, use the button or lever to lock the blade in place. This is useful for taking measurements over longer distances or when working with a partner. If you are measuring a shorter distance and need a pause to do other things, simply press the quick brake on the front side of the tape measure. This special function can be found in our MGA and RGA-G series.
  5. Retract the blade: When you are finished taking measurements, press the button or lever to release the blade and carefully retract it back into the housing.

Using a Tape Measure for Different Tasks

A tape measure can be used for a wide range of tasks, the most common situation including:

  1. Measuring for furniture: When shopping for furniture, it is important to measure the space where it will be placed to ensure it will fit. Use a tape measure to measure the length, width, and height of the space.
  2. Determining the size of a room: To determine the square footage of a room, measure the length and width of the room and multiply the measurements together.
  3. Estimating material needs: When completing a home improvement project, use a tape measure to determine the amount of materials you will need. For example, if you are installing a new floor, measure the length and width of the room to determine how much flooring material you will need.

Tips for Using and Caring for a Tape Measure

  1. Store your tape measure properly: When not in use, store your tape measure in a dry, cool place to prevent damage to the blade. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or in a humid environment.
  2. Clean your tape measure regularly: Wipe the blade and housing of your tape measure with a dry cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using liquids or sol to clean the tapes.
  3. Do proper checking routinely: Make sure the tape hook is working properly as it should slide back and forth and the gap should be exactly the thickness of the hook which is one-sixteenth of an inch. You can find the explanation here (https://ribrosco.com.tw/blog/measuring-tape-smart-trick-everyone-must-know/). In addition, check if the rivets and screws are rusty. If so, it’s possible that it’d break some time. You certainly don’t want the tape measure breaks while using it. Additionally, if the blade becomes bent or damaged, it may need to be replaced.

Tape measure explained in detail

Tape measures are an essential tool for any handy person, whether you are a professional contractor or a DIY enthusiast. These versatile tools are designed to measure lengths, widths, and other dimensions with precision and ease. In this article, we will explore the different parts of a tape measure. And in the next one, we’ll demonstrate how to use it for a variety of tasks.

Parts of a Tape Measure

A tape measure consists of several parts:

  1. Blade: The blade is the flexible, retractable strip of metal or fiberglass (mostly metal in R&B’s case) that is marked with measurements. It is usually marked in both inches and centimeters, and with different colors for better visibility.
  2. Hook: The hook is a protrusion at the end of the blade that is used to anchor the tape measure in place while taking a measurement. The hook is often slotted or curved to allow it to easily grab onto edges.
  3. Housing: The housing is the outer casing usually made of ABS plastic, which holds the blade in place when it is not in use. It is usually made of plastic or metal and may have a rubber or rubber-like coating to provide grip.
  4. Button or lever: Most tape measures have a button or lever made of PE plastic that can be used to lock the blade in place when taking a measurement. This is useful for taking measurements over longer distances or when working with a partner.
  5. Belt clip: All of our tape measures are equipped with a belt clip made of S50C Medium carbon steel. The clip enables users to hang the tape measure on their belt so they can deploy it wherever they want when needed.
  6. Wrist strap: Tape measures with PVC wrist strap can make sure users don’t drop it accidentally.

How we fight COVID-19 Coronavirus using hand tools

COVID-19 coronavirus – the distance between people

As COVID-19 coronavirus cases continue to spread, the experts have been telling people that social distancing helps to slow the spread of coronavirus. The CDC recommended that people keep a distance from others of at least 1.5 meters in indoor environments and 1 meter in outdoor ones.

The CDC is also issuing warnings that people could get COVID-19 coronavirus by touching a surface or object, such as a table or door handle, that has the virus on it, and then touching their mouths, noses, or eyes. The latest Centers for Disease Control guidelines are easy and clear: keep your hands away from your eyes.

To prevent possible exposure, it’s best to keep your hands off your face, and definitely stop rubbing your eyes. The best way to do that: start wearing safety goggles and rubber gloves, which can form a physical barrier to protect your face — and your eyes — from germs in the air.

What Is a Tape Measure Home Run?

What is a tape measure home run???

2019 World Series

The 2019 World Series ended with the Washington Nationals beating the Houston Astros 6-2 in game 7. The Nationals won the World Series 4-3 by winning all 4 games in Houston as the road team. Although the Astros lost the series, their hitter George Springer unleashed a LONG “tape measure” home run in Game 5, which was very impressive.

Long homer measured

Most of you have been using tape measures for your whole life, and some people also watch baseball for quite some time. But do you know the term “Tape Measures Homer”?

In baseball, it means a home run that is hit extremely well which makes the ball fly exceptionally long distance from the home plate.

Baseball measurement

The Origin

The term originated from a home run hit by The Yankees player Mickey Mantle in 1953. He belted a 565-foot home run out of Griffith Stadium off of Senators’ pitcher Chuck Stobbs. It was listed in the Guinness Book of Sports Records as the longest home run to be hit in a regular-season major league game. The ball’s distance was measured immediately. And on the day following the baseball game Mantle appeared in the newspaper holding a giant tape measure. It became one of the most famous home runs ever. This blast was headline news in a number of newspapers and a major story across the country. From that date forward long home runs were referred to as “tape measure” homers.

How to Choose the Right Wrench

How to Choose the Right Wrench

There are so many different kinds of wrenches on the market. It can be tricky and overwhelming to find the right one. But you don’t have to worry about it anymore after reading this guide. We are here to help you learn how to choose the right wrench for the job.

How to Choose the Right Wrench

Open-Ended Wrenches

An open-ended wrench is probably the most useful tool in your tool kit. It is usually the quickest and easiest to use. It has a U-shaped opening that grips two opposite faces of the bolt or nut and also has flat jaws that slide around the heads of nuts and bolts and are levered for loosening or tightening. Open-ended wrenches are often double-ended, with a different sized opening at each end. The ends are generally oriented at an angle of around 15 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the handle. This allows a greater range of movement in enclosed spaces by flipping the wrench over. Open-ended wrenches grip the bolt from the side. This is useful for working under the hood of a car or to hold a nut in place while ratcheting a bolt.

Combination Wrenches

A combination wrench is a double-ended tool which has an open-ended jaw at one end and a boxed end or ring spanner of the same size on the other end. Both ends generally fit the same size of bolt.

Adjustable Wrenches

Also known as crescent wrenches. It is the most common type of wrench. An adjustable wrench accommodates nuts and bolts of various sizes. It’s designed to move in only one direction, which prevents putting too much stress on the screw that sits just below the head of the wrench. An adjustable wrench’s head is offset a little, which helps when loosening or tightening. The gripping faces of the jaw are displaced to a 15-degree angle that is relative to the tool’s handle. This helps the wrench’s ability to be used in tight spaces.

Socket Wrenches

A socket wrench is good for working on automobiles and other machinery. These wrenches come in two types: those with deep sockets for bigger bolts and those with shallow sockets for smaller bolts. Both can tighten nuts in tight spaces. Socket wrenches work just like the ring end of a wrench, but the ratchet handle makes the operation much faster.

Ratcheting Box Wrenches

Ratcheting can be reversed by flipping the wrench over, or by activating a reversing lever. This type combines the compact design of a box wrench, with the utility and quickness of use of a ratchet wrench.

How to Clean and Maintain Rubber Gloves

Rubber gloves are also referred to as latex gloves, can be purchased at home improvement centers and hardware stores. Wearing rubber gloves for housekeeping and kitchen chores can protect your hands and nails from harsh chemicals, hot water and things that you just don’t want to touch. While they are relatively cheap to replace, it’s always nice to be able to keep a pair of good quality gloves lasting long enough. So what should you do to ensure your rubber gloves are kept in good condition for as long as possible? What are some simple ways in terms of how to clean your rubber gloves and keep the inside fresh and sanitized?

how to clean rubber gloves

1) Wash the outside of the gloves with mild liquid detergent and warm water thoroughly to remove dirt.

The first thing you have to do after using the gloves is to wash them. The very substances you want to keep away from your hands are all over the outside of your gloves. So take a few minutes at the end of a chore to rinse them thoroughly. Remember, the best way to wash your gloves is to treat them like your own hands. Dish soap or hand soap is fine to rinse the gloves. Warm water can kill more germs, dirt, and grease. You can wash the gloves while you are still wearing them, and avoid water and residue getting on your hands. Let them dry completely. It might be wise to turn them inside out after the outside has dried, allowing both sides to dry out.

2) Protect Your Rubber Gloves at Storage

Protect your gloves from heat and sunlight when they are being stored. Avoid putting them near windows with strong sunlight streams or in a hot storage room, unless you want your gloves to turn into a melted mess. Gloves should also be protected from being punctured, so don’t store them with any knives, shears, or other pointy objects. Even the smallest punctured hole in your gloves can give you a wet surprise the next time you wash dishes.

3) Don’t use the same pair of gloves for Kitchen and Bathroom cleaning

It does not sound like a good idea to wash your dishes with the gloves you wear when you scrub the toilet. You can choose another pair of gloves with a different color for each chore, or even use disposable gloves for some chores. For example, some people use rubber gloves for washing dishes in the kitchen but use disposable gloves for chores like the bathroom. Find what works best for you. Store each pair conveniently where you will be doing the task. If you have multiple bathrooms, you can even store a pair in each one. Or, store the gloves with the cleaning supplies separate for each task, perhaps in a small carrying case.
Last but not least, always remember to put on gloves when you are doing household chores. This extra step can help you protect and maintain your hand, nails, and skin. In the long run, not having to deal with dry skin and cracked nails is certainly time-saving.
