Tape Measure Standout

Have you ever wondered why the blade on a tape measure is made curved? The design is not meaningless. It helps keep the blade rigid when extended. The curve allows the blade to “stand out and stick” while measuring, enabling the users to read the measurement properly. Generally speaking, the wider the blade, the longer the standout.

Standout is the maximum extension of a blade before it collapses under its own weight. Or, more formally, standout is a measure of a tape’s capacity for unsupported extension without breaking. Put simply, ‘standout’ is the distance a tape measure’s blade can be extended before it bends or ‘snaps’. Obviously, the longer the standout the better. Using a measuring tape with insufficient standout when working alone or measuring long or tall objects is certainly painful. So next time when you are buying a tape measure, be sure to check each tape’s standout length listed under the ‘Product Information’ section.

Tape Measure Standout VS Tape Measure Reach

Recently some manufacturers have been advertising tape measure “Reach” instead of “standout”. So what’s the difference between them? Imagine that you’re shopping for tape measures at the store, and you pick up two tape measures for comparison. One has 16 feet of reach, and the other said it has 14 feet of standout. Which one would you pick?

So what is reach? If standout is the maximum blade extension under ideal circumstances, and is dependent on the tape measure blade shape, size, strength, and other factors, what is “reach?” How is reach defined if it’s not the same thing as standout? As we dig deeper, we found from the numbers, it seems that “reach” is the standout plus 3-feet.
Reach = Standout + 3 feet
“Reach” is meant to represent the maximum blade extension when a user holds a tape measure at maximum standout with one hand, and then extends that hand three feet out from the other hand that’s still holding the tape measure itself (as below photo shown).

Most consumer may not be aware of the distinction between standout and reach, but it is what users can relate to, much more so than standout. As time goes by, maybe several years from now, this shift of terminology will be adopted by all tape measure brands. Because not doing so, there will be a huge disadvantage in terms of marketing and customer perceptions, or at least when shoppers compare product specifications head to head across brands. So in the future, when you are going to buy a tape measure, be sure to recognize the marketing language and properly interpret the difference between “Reach” and “Standout”.

Humans have a rather unusual habit we don’t share with many other animals, and, unfortunately, it makes us particularly susceptible during certain disease outbreaks – we keep touching our faces. Our species is one of the few in the animal kingdom known to touch their faces regularly, and we often do it without even noticing. Studies have shown that we are particularly prone to touching areas around the mouth, nose, and eyes. When it comes to a disease like the new coronavirus, Covid-19, that is a recipe for fast transmission.

Some studies found that Covid-19 can survive on metal, glass, and plastic for as long as nine days unless they are properly disinfected. Some can even hang around for up to 28 days in low temperatures. They are particularly resilient in terms of where they can survive.

People touch surfaces and then reached for their eyes and nose or other parts of their faces, and this makes us humans extremely susceptible during disease outbreaks like that of Covid-19. In fact, there was an elder person got Ebola because he touched infected surfaces and then rubbed his eyes.

The propensity to self-touch is perhaps where goggles offer a useful form of protection. While safety goggles don’t stop the virus, they make it harder to touch the eyes. I know what you would think: I’ll look stupid wearing safety goggles on the street. People might think I am some kind of construction worker. But you never know when you touch your eyes without knowing it. So wearing goggles will make you less vulnerable to the virus.

Why are tape measure rivets so important?

Ever wonder why that hook on the end of a tape measure isn’t fixed in position? It wiggles on its rivet(s) to make up for the hook’s thickness. Push the tip against something for an inside measurement, and the hook is included in the reading; hook it on the end of a piece for an outside measure, and the resulting gap equals the space the hook would take up.

When your tape is equipped with low-quality tape measure rivets, these are the possible scenarios you’ll run into:
1. Rusting problem: When pounding rivets on tape measures, the plating surface of the rivets will be expanded, creating a crack, and that’s where the rusting starts from. The crack gives room for the air to contact the inside iron, which eventually causes the rivet to rust. The rusting makes the rivet expand (or crack, if you will) more than it should. And this eventually leads to the dysfunction of the tape measure hook.

2. Lack of Aesthetic Finish: Another situation you’ll run into is the aesthetics. Normally when pounding, the rivet end expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter. A perfect rivet after pounding will result in roughly a dumbbell shape. Using low-quality rivet, the rivet opens up about 2.0-2.5 times the original size. This will make the dumbbell shape unsymmetrical, and decrease the aesthetic appeal of the tape measure hook. In some cases, low-quality tape measure rivets will even cause inaccuracy when measuring.

Covid-19 #coronavirus

Updates in Taiwan:
Taipei, Feb. 2 (CNA) The 10 people in Taiwan confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus that has spread through China are in stable condition, and one of them could be discharged from the hospital next week.

No virus was detected in two separate tests of samples from that patient and the person is expected to be discharged from the hospital as soon as next week, said Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) at a press briefing Saturday.

Chen would not identify which patient it was.

The minister, who also heads Taiwan’s Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), said that as of 4 p.m. Saturday, there were 964 people suspected of being sickened by the coronavirus, including 10 confirmed to be infected and 746 who were ruled out as being infected.

The rest are in quarantine, with 79 of them having tested negative for the viral infection in a preliminary laboratory examination, according to the CECC.

Meanwhile, 492 people who came in contact with the 10 confirmed cases of the virus are currently being monitored. Of them, 34 have reported symptoms and six are still awaiting conclusive test results, the CECC said.

The novel coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan last December and has now been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization.

As of Sunday morning, China had recorded 14,380 confirmed cases and 304 deaths, while nearly 160 confirmed cases have been reported in other countries around the world, including 10 in Taiwan.

Unless you use a measuring tape daily, you may have never even noticed those small diamond-shaped details on the top scale. And, even if you have, we bet that you only have the best guess as to what they might mean. That’s why we’re going to set the record straight regarding these unique features. Hint: They’re not just cute, they’re also super helpful!

Here’s a video of YouTuber Tom Hintz, he set the record straight on why these shapes have been included on the tape, and how to best use them to your advantage.

Now, there are several different types of markers on a standard spool of measuring tape. And, unless you’re a professional, you probably haven’t had too much use for them yet. Nevertheless, we think that some of these markings can be really beneficial, especially if you are working on a more heavy-duty DIY project.

Small black diamond on measuring tape

On measuring tapes, one can find a small black diamond on the inch scale of the tape at 19.2 inches. And these marks will appear again for every 19.2 inches. In other words, the first black diamond is at 19.2”. And after that, they appear at 38.4”, 57.6”, 76.8” and 96”, or 8-feet. They are for truss layouts for 8-foot sheet goods, therefore they are also known as the “black truss” markings, which provide a quick visual for the tape user and speed up the measuring process.
If you divide 5 into 96 inches (8 feet) gives 19.2 inches, which yields five trusses per sheet. The black diamonds on the tape measure represent that spacing.
